Xena

      June 3, 2009

The best news yet! Xena went in today for xrays and they showed her bones healed well enough to have all the pins removed. Hurrah! We still need to prevent her from any pounding or jolting on her front leg, but the vet felt she could go back to training in agility on non-impact obstactles. In another month he feels she should be able to slowly work back up to full training!

Xena is back to herself and because of lack of exercise and something to do, she is insane! ;-)

April 23, 2009

Great news! Xena had her leg xrayed for her 6 week check-up. The surgeon was very pleased with her xray results! Next week she will have one or more pins removed. The pins are removed in stages. The surgeon stated that this method has been proven to be the best strategy to speed up healing without putting too much stress at once on the leg. We will, and we know Xena will be happy about having the top pin removed as it is a constantly pressing into her skin preventing healing.

Xena has had many other trips to the vet because there have been problems with areas around a couple of pins not healing and creating problems. Then she got up too fast and harmed the leg and wouldn't walk on it again for almost a week. She goes for xrays this week to see how the bones are healing. We are "keeping fingers crossed" that the bones are healing nicely!

On March 3rd Xena escaped and was hit by a car. She sustained a break in both the ulna and radius bones of her right leg in addition to some gashes and scraping. Below are some images that we took after her surgery.

Immediately after getting home the day after surgery shown below.

About 10 days later just after cleaning. Every day the dirty sponges are removed and skin around her multiple pins are cleaned.

Around 17 days after surgery showing one side.
